Steve Torrence to race Bernstein in Fall Nationals' first round

Steve Torrence’s return to NHRA Top Fuel racing got off to a rousing start Friday when the new Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster covered the 1,000-feet in 3.999 seconds at 301.67 mph in the first round of qualifying for the AAA Texas Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.

The elapsed time was 11th quickest of the two sessions and brought satisfied smiles and sighs of relief to Torrence, crew chief Richard Hogan, the hard-working crew and the team’s many friends and fans.

“I was really pleased with our team and the performance of the car,” Torrence said.  “We didn’t run very well on our second run.  The engine dropped a cylinder and we slowed down (4.019 at 299.77 mph).  But we did go down the track on both our runs and we stayed in the top 12.

“We’ll be working on our combination.  We want to come back (Saturday) and see if we can improve those times.”

This is Torrence’s first race since May, when he decided to start his own team.

Qualifying laps three and four on the Brad Hadman-built dragster are at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m
