TORRENCE GOES TO QUARTERFINALS AT LAS VEGAS

vs. SchumacherOctober 28, 2012 -- Steve Torrence came up one-hundredth of a second short of advancing to Sunday’s semifinals of the Big O Tires Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Some of the Vegas luck was riding with Torrence in his opening-round win against Morgan Lucas.  Both drivers had tire-smoking issues, but Torrence put the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster into the lead off the starting line and got the win light.  Lucas was knocked out of contention when his car smoked the tires early in the 1,000-foot lap.

Torrence’s time was 4.102 seconds at 264.03 mph to Lucas’ 4.546 at 236.63.

In the quarterfinals, Torrence and Tony Schumacher were side-by-side almost all the way down the track.  Schumacher reached the finish line first in 3.847 at 324.67 to a 3.859 at 319.97 – a difference of one-hundredth of a second.

“Tony is always tough to beat,” commented Torrence.  “We hoped to get to the semifinals like we did in our first race here in April.  We had a good race car all weekend.  Now we’ll look ahead to the season finale in Pomona (Calif., Nov. 8-11).
