TRACTION TROUBLE SIDELINES STEVE TORRENCE AT POMONA

November 11, 2012 -- The end of his team’s first season of NHRA Full Throttle competition came too quickly for Steve Torrence Sunday in the Auto Club Finals.

Torrence began the day intent on securing eighth place during eliminations, but his aspirations went up in a cloud of smoke almost at the same time he mashed the throttle on the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster.

All he could do then was watch Bob Vandergriff – who had no trouble – drive away with the win and eighth place.  His time was 3.810 seconds at 324.83 mph to Torrence’s coasting 6.268 at 101.55.

Torrence finished ninth with 2,300 points.

“Obviously that was not the way we wanted to finish the season,” said Torrence.  “We are very disappointed.”

As the round unfolded, Torrence wasn’t the only driver to experience traction problems, just the first.  Seven more followed him.

“Looking back, we had a very good first year, winning three times in five final rounds,” he said.  “And we learned a lot.  Our plan is to regroup during the winter months and come back strong at the 2013 Winternationals in Pomona.”

That race begins Feb. 14 in Pomona.
