STEVE TORRENCE SEEKING ‘PERFECT ENDING’ TO HIS 2012 SEASON

November 7, 2012 -- The curtain falls on Steve Torrence’s Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel team this weekend in the 49th annual Auto Club Finals at Pomona Raceway, but not before he has an opportunity to boost his winning total to four races in what has been a highly successful first year.

“This season has gone by extremely fast,” commented Torrence.  “It doesn’t seem like we’ve already been to 22 races.  It has definitely been a whirlwind kind of year and it would be a perfect ending if we could take home another Wally trophy Sunday.”

The team vowed to improve in February before it left Pomona after a first-round loss in the season-opening Winternationals, and it has.

Torrence’s Top Fuel racing resume now includes three victories (Atlanta, Englishtown, N.J. and Seattle) in five final rounds.  His quickest 1,000-foot time is 3.754 seconds and his fastest speed is 326.70 mph.

“We started the season with no expectations,” he said.  “We put a good group of guys together and we have really jelled as a team.  We’ve had a good race car all along, and there’s still one more race to go.”

He vanquished any doubts that his one-car effort would not compete with multi-car teams by holding on to fourth place in Full Throttle Series competition going into the Countdown to the Championship’s final six races.

“We have faltered a little in the last few races at the end of the year and it has taken us out of championship contention,” Torrence explained, “but what we learned from this is invaluable.  Richard Hogan, our crew chief, was very instrumental in building this team.  He hired a great group of guys.  They have worked every day, whether it was at our shop or on the road, to make sure we always have a competitive car.

“We are also looking ahead to the 2013 season.  It’s not that far away and we want to get off to a good start.

Torrence is eighth in points (2,265) going into the Finals, just one point ahead of Bob Vandergriff and 34 behind No. 7 Morgan Lucas.
