TORRENCE RUNS BETTER, BUT LUCAS RUNS QUICKER AT BRAINERD

August 19, 2012 -- Steve Torrence’s quickest run of the weekend was not enough to beat Morgan Lucas Sunday in the opening round of the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Torrence sent the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster down the 1,000-foot track in 3.895 seconds at 318.84 mph, but he couldn’t catch Lucas, who put up the category’s best numbers of the weekend – 3.788 at 327.90 mph – to move into the next round.

Lucas marched through the rest of the field, defeating Antron Brown in the finale, to win the race that is sponsored by his family’s business.

“We struggled this weekend and had some problems but we did run better . . . but so did Morgan,” said Torrence.  “We’re going back to our shop in Brownsburg (Ind.) to get ready to do some testing next week.”

Crew chief Richard Hogan and the crew will be preparing for the prestigious 58th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, Aug. 31-Sept. 3.  It is the 17th and final regular-season race that sets the field for the six-race Countdown to One.
