STEVE TORRENCE EXCITED ABOUT TEAM’S PLAYOFF DEBUT

September 13, 2012 -- On his first visit to zMax Dragway five months ago, North Carolina drag racing fans didn’t know much about Steve Torrence, who was then a new Top Fuel team owner competing in his fifth NHRA Full Throttle Series event.

But the Texan from Kilgore flashed the potential that gradually propelled him into championship contention when he produced his first No. 1 qualifying time of 3.799 seconds at 322.34 mph and followed that with a first-round win in the 4-Wide race.

Now, three wins and five final rounds later, the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. crew returns
for the start of NHRA’s first Countdown to the Championship race, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals, at zMax Dragway, Sept. 14-16.  He is now fourth in Full Throttle series standings, just 50 points behind leader Antron Brown (2,110-2,060) after points were reset following the U.S. Nationals.  The difference prior to that was 242.

The revise also separated each top 10 driver by 10 points, with the exception of Brown, who is 30 ahead of Spencer Massey.

“This is an exciting time for our team,” Torrence said.  “We have learned a lot since we left Charlotte, and we believe that will help us over all six Countdown races.

“Every member of this team is ready for the challenges ahead – this is the beginning of four races in a row – and it was our goal to get here.  Now we can compete for the championship.”
