IT’S COMEBACK TIME FOR STEVE TORRENCE AT ST. LOUIS

September 26, 2012 -- As the NHRA Countdown to the Championship series reaches the halfway mark, Steve Torrence believes his first-year team is poised to make its presence felt in the inaugural AAA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

“We have been fighting some issues since the Countdown began (two races ago) at Charlotte,” he commented, “but our new Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster is running better now.  That is a definite confidence booster for me.

“I’ve never raced at St. Louis, but that is the track where I qualified for my Top Fuel license.”

His one-car team showed it can compete with the multi-car teams during the 17-race regular season by winning three times in five final-round appearances.  He also piled up enough Full Throttle points to place fourth going into the six-race title playoff.

However, some of those “issues” led to first-round losses at Charlotte and Dallas and dropped Torrence into the eighth slot (2,126 points), necessitating a performance rebound to keep his title hopes alive.

“We made some adjustments to the car and now we need to improve our performance,” he said. “That loss at Dallas didn’t knock us out of the championship picture, but we can’t afford to make any more mistakes.”

This is the first NHRA national event at the track after a one-year hiatus. It is across the Mississippi River from St. Louis.
