TORRENCE GOES TO QUARTERFINALS AT MIDWEST NATIONALS

September 30, 2012 -- Steve Torrence recorded his quickest elapsed time in 10 races on Sunday when he defeated Bob Vandergriff in the opening round of the AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals.

Competing in ideal racing conditions, Torrence drove the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster to a time of 3.793 seconds at 321.27 to Vandergriff’s 3.9087 at 309.63 mph.

Torrence’s competitive day ended in the quarterfinals, when he lost to Full Throttle Series point leader – and eventual race winner – Antron Brown.

“The engine dropped a cylinder when I hit the throttle against Antron and the car ran on seven cylinders,” said Torrence after his lap of 3.904 at 306.74.  Brown got the win light in 3.878 seconds, 321.19 mph.  “We needed eight cylinders to beat him.

“Overall, it wasn’t a bad weekend.  We have a few problems to figure out.  We’ll fix them and move on to Reading (Pa., site of the 28th annual Auto-Plus Nationals starting Friday).”
