TORRENCE LOOKING FOR VICTORY AS U.S. NATIONALS RESUME AT INDY

IndySeptember 7, 2012 --As Steve Torrence joins the contingent of NHRA drivers returning to a dry Lucas Oil Raceway, their focus is on completing the rain-delayed Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the sport’s pre-eminent event.

There are two qualifying sessions scheduled Saturday, followed by eliminations on Sunday.  This is the final race prior to the start of the Countdown to One championship playoffs.  The top 10 drivers in each professional category will advance to the six-race event.

In Torrence’s first year as a team owner, he has won three times in five finals rounds, climbed into fourth place in Full Throttle series points and is already playoff-bound.  He plans to use Saturday’s runs to improve his current ninth-place qualifying position.   His best run is 3.834 seconds at 295.34 mph in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster.

“We are looking forward to getting back on the track so we can finish qualifying and run the race,” he commented.  “A win at Indy would be very satisfying.

“We are also looking ahead to next week and the start of the Countdown.  We are going to be very busy, but we are very happy to be in the playoffs in our first year.”

This extra race weekend created a rarity in NHRA scheduling – a string of five consecutive races.  The Countdown to One begins at Charlotte, Sept. 14-16.  It is followed by stops at Dallas, Sept. 21-23; St. Louis, Sept. 28-30; and Reading, Pa., Oct. 5-7.  The final two events are at Las Vegas, Oct. 26-28, and Pomona, Calif., Nov. 8-11.
