STEVE TORRENCE GETS THE ROUND WIN HE WAS SEEKING

October 27, 2013 -- Steve Torrence won Sunday’s opening round of the Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but his bid for one more fell short.

He took advantage of T.J. Zizzo’s slow start and was able to build a lead large enough to get the victory after the motor in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster dropped a cylinder.  His time was 3.390 seconds at 308.78 mph to Zizzo’s 4.041 at 306.05.

“I am glad we got that win light,” said a smiling Torrence.  “It has been a long time.  Now we don’t have to talk about that anymore.  I felt real good when I saw the light.”

In the next round against Brandon Bernstein, he left first followed by closely by Torrence, whose tires began smoking at the hit of the throttle.

“I thought I had a chance to catch him.” he recalled. “His car had problems, but it was too late.”  Bernstein’s time was 4.783 at 171.10 mph to Torrence’s 5.392 at 213.47.

“We only have one more race this year to see if we can get another win,” commented Torrence.

The Auto Club Finals is scheduled Nov. 7-10 at Pomona, Calif.
