TORRENCE EIGHTH AFTER OPENING ROUND AT SPRING NATIONALS

April 26, 2013 -- Steve Torrence began Friday’s qualifying for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals in the hot Houston-area sun and drove to a notable elapsed of 3.833 seconds at 317.62 mph that was the session’s best.

When the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster got back on the Royal Purple Raceway asphalt several hours later, the conditions were more conducive to quicker 1,000-foot elapsed times and the results were not as good.

The dragster’s tires lost traction, forcing him to abort the run and he settled for the provisional No. 8 spot with two more laps on tap Saturday.

“We were trying too hard on the last run, but we still made it into the top eight with one more day to go,” said Torrence.  “We have a good race car.  We will improve.”
