STEVE TORRENCE LOSES TRACTION, FIRST-ROUND RACE TO LUCAS

April 28, 2013 -- The weather in Baytown, Texas, improved in time for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals, but a tricky racing surface produced tire smoke in all four first-round races.

Steve Torrence was the first driver to experience the loss of traction in the opening round, and it came as soon as he as mashed the throttle of the Torrance Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster.
He let the car settle down and pedaled the throttle, but the tires did not hook up and the win went to Morgan Lucas.

Torrence’s time was 7.211 seconds at 95.62 mph while Lucas, whose engine dropped several cylinders, was able to reach the finish line first in 4.190 at 292.52.

“That really wasn’t the result we hoped it would be . . . but there wasn’t anything more I could do,” Torrence said.  “I was surprised the tires got loose that early.  There were a lot of family friends who came to watch us race and it’s too bad it ended as soon as it did.

“We need to get our car running like it was last year at this time.”

There isn’t much time off before the team resumes action.  The Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals are May 3-5 at Commerce, Ga.  Torrence won his first Top Fuel race last year at that track.
