TRACTION WOES SLOW TORRENCE AS ACTION BEGINS AT LAS VEGAS

April 5, 2013 -- Steve Torrence picked up the pace on Friday’s second qualifying run to move into the 10th provisional starting position for Sunday’s SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The distinctive black and red Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster bolted from the starting line but began spinning the tires at half-track.  “I legged it through to the finish line and, considering everything, it wasn’t a bad run,” Torrence said after he stopped the timer in 3.871 seconds at 297.81 mph.

The car also suffered traction problems on his initial attempt so he shut off the engine and rolled through in 5.286 seconds, 129.69 mph.  He reached half-track before the smoking began and immediately shut off the motor.

“There were some issues with the racing surface,” he said.  “The track should be better Saturday and our Capco car will be running better.”

He has two more laps Saturday to improve his position before eliminations begin.
