TORRENCE’S 3.817-SECOND LAP PUTS HIM NINTH IN KANSAS NATIONALS

May 18, 2013 -- Steve Torrence took his quickest ride in five races Saturday and will start from the ninth spot in Sunday’s first round of the Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

The sleek, black and red Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster recorded an elapsed time of 3.817 seconds at 319.60 mph on its first qualifying lap.

“I was glad to see it,” said Torrence.  “It was third-quickest of the session.  That’s what (new crew chief) Lee Beard and I wanted.”

Beard made a few tune-up changes that caused tire spin and smoke on the day’s final 1,000-foot pass so Torrence shut off the engine and crossed the line in 4.817 at 149.55.

“I’m looking forward to racing,” Torrence said.  “We will be ready to go . . . if the weather will cooperate.”

His first-round opponent is David Grubnic, No. 8, 3.813 at 319.75.
