TORRENCE STAYS 8TH GOING INTO FIRST NEW ENGLAND NATIONALS

June 22, 2013 -- Steve Torrance launches his bid Sunday for a second consecutive NHRA Mello Yello Series victory that would etch his name into the archives as the first Top Fuel winner of the New England Nationals.

He made one more solid qualifying lap Saturday in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. dragster while crew chief Lee Beard experimented with combinations for the racing surface at New England Dragway in Epping, NH.  His first run Friday – 3.847 seconds at 321.27 mph – was his best and he will start eighth.

Torrence won his first 2013 race Sunday at Bristol, TN and climbed into ninth place in series standings with 459 points.  Round wins are crucial.  Clay Millican is eighth (473) and his teammate, Bob Vandergriff, is 10th (448).

And Millican (9th, 3.855 at 319.60) will be in the opposite lane when Torrence goes to the starting line on Sunday.   Torrence beat Millican in last Sunday's semifinals.
