STEVE TORRENCE CONTINUES HIS HUNT FOR POINTS AT NORWALK

July 6, 2013 --Steve Torrence took advantage of a powerful Lee Beard tune-up Friday night and the result provided the sixth starting berth for Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio.

The Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster began with an eye-catching lap of 3.870 seconds at 323.74 seconds and came back with an even better encore lap of 3.806 at his career-best of a whopping 327.03 mph.

Saturday’s results weren’t as spectacular, but his 3.859-second run was notable because it came in the afternoon.  “That shows Lee’s getting prepared for a hot race track,” Torrence said.

“We really ran well Friday night,” he continued.  “I was very happy with the big speed.  It proves we are making a lot of power.  Lee did some experimenting Saturday and that 3.859 was a pleasant surprise.”

Torrence races Terry McMillan (11th, 3.842 at 322.19 mph) in the first round.  McMillan beat Torrence last Sunday in the second round at Chicago in a tire-smoking race.

“We need to continue running run well,” he said.  “We are fighting for Mello Yello points so we can move into the Countdown.”

Torrence is on the bump spot at 10 with 549 points.  He trails Bob Vandergriff (559), Morgan Lucas (608) and Clay Millican (620) with five races to go before the top 10 move into the championship rounds.  His nearest rival is Brandon Bernstein (478).
