STEVE TORRENCE CLOSING IN ON PLAYOFF POSITION

August 17, 2013 -- Steve Torrence is close to locking up another appearance in NHRA’s Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.  So close, in fact, that multiple Top Fuel round wins Sunday in the Lucas Oil Nationals might be enough to bring a sigh of relief from the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. team.

Torrence sits in the 10-slot with 741 points.  Only this event and the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, Aug. 29-Sept. 2., remain on the  regular-season schedule.

He qualified eighth-quickest Saturday at Brainerd International Raceway and meets Tommy Johnson Jr.in the opening round.  Torrence was the quickest of the pair – 3.818 seconds at 323.66 mph to 3.820 at 316.90.   l

The two met in the opening round at Sonoma last month and Johnson upset to the top qualifier when Torrence’s dragster smoked the tires.

“They have a good team,” Torrence said of the team that is based in Australia.

He could move ahead of Bob Vandergriff, who is ninth in points and a mere 17 tallies in front of Torrence, with at least one more round win than Vandergriff -- who opens against series points leader Shawn Langdon.

“We planned to get some rest Saturday night to be ready for a good Sunday at the race track”, said Torrence.
