TORRENCE GOES ONE ROUND AND GAINS SPOT IN PLAYOFF CHASE

August 18, 2013 -- Although Steve Torrence couldn’t officially secure the top 10 berth that he covets on Sunday, he knows what must be accomplished if he wants to challenge for the Mello Yello Series Top Fuel crown in the Countdown to the Championship.

Torrence began Lucas Oil Nationals eliminations with a victory over Tommy Johnson Jr. at Brainerd International Raceway.  He led all 1,000 feet and was timed in 3.802 seconds at 323.43 mph to 3.866 at 318.17.

While his competitive day ended with a rare foul start against Clay Millican in the next round, his playoff hopes brightened.  His points total grew to 794 and lifted him over Bob Vandergriff and into ninth place by five points.   Vandergriff lost to Shawn Langdon in the first round.

“There are days like this,” said Torrence.  “There was something very good for this team that did come out of this race.  The points are still very close and we only have one more race to decide it.”

That is the U.S. Nationals, the sport’s oldest and most esteemed event on the schedule, Aug. 30- Sept. 2 at Indianapolis.
