TORRENCE SURVIVES FIRST ROUND

May 18, 2014 -- Kilgore's Steve Torrence survived a bizarre first round of racing sunday night at Atlanta Dragway after rain postponed the start of the Summit Southern Nationals by more than eight hours and effectively compromised the racing surface.

Torrence, who was the number four qualifier in his capco contractors top fuel dragster, got past Indiana's Terry McMillen in one of only four first round races completed Sunday evening before N.H.R.A. officials pulled the plug.  Racing will resume Monday.

Third in Mello Yello series points, Torrence admitted that he couldn't even see the starting signal because of the sun's glare Sunday night.  "I just went when I saw something flash," he said, "I didn't know if it was my light or his."
